The BIG question with the Cleveland Browns right now…
With the NFL season coming upon us, there are many questions to be asked and answered. I guess one of the most popular questions that I’ve heard has been. Can the Cleveland Browns make the playoffs this year?
Baker, & The offense coming together
There are many questions within this question. First off is the play of QB Baker Mayfield as we look at some of his stats from last year 3,725yds passing 27TD’s and 14INT’s all this in only 13 ½ games. If Mayfield played all 16 games his numbers would have been 4,414yds passing 32TD’s and 16INT’s. I think we can admit that’s a solid season as a rookie.
My personal opinion on this is to expect Mayfield’s numbers to drop a bit as most rookie QB’s who have great first years usually do. To compare, Kurt Warner, who I think had the most similar numbers to Mayfield.
Adding new talent to the Team
Next question is the off season acquisition of Odell Beckham Jr. First since he will play all year barring any injury. Which Odell are we going to see? The one who played in 2015 or the one from 2016 and the first half of 2018. If we see the the Odell from 15′, the Browns will make their fans happy and bring excitement to the city. If we see the 2016 tantrum filled Odell it’s going to be a long year for Cleveland. We all know that Mayfield will have no problem calling out Beckham if he doesn’t play to his ability.
Now to look at the RB position with the newly acquired Kareem Hunt who will be suspended for the first 8 games this season due to a domestic dispute. Last year the Browns drafted Nick Chubb who provided a spark for them once he received a chance to be the starter, he amassed 996 rushing yards and 8 TD’s last season. Chubb only started 9 games last season with the Browns.
The Cleveland Browns revamped their defensive line this off season by trading for Olivier Vernon. Vernon had a down year last year with the Giants as they moved the defensive lineman to linebacker last season. Cleveland hopes for him to get back to his 2016 season where he was a standout for the Giants on that d-line where he had 64 tackles and 8.5 sacks.
What may or may not happen
The Cleveland Browns do benefit from playing the 10th easiest schedule in the NFL and also what I feel is a weak AFC North division. I do think the Browns have enough talent on this team to make the playoffs. I honestly feel they will just come up short again this year.
